What does Haegens Media do?
We are an online video production company and we produce videos for our three YouTube channels. The main channel is Dylan Haegens with 1.8 million subscribers. We also produce video’s for companies and major brands such as ‘Kinderpostzegels’ and LEGO. In recent years, we have increasingly developed into a professional online video production company with a focus on online entertainment. We are also still working on format development. Our film from two years ago performed extremely well and with an audience of 330,000, it was the most successful family film of 2018. We are now working on formats for Netflix and KRO-NCRV (a Dutch public broadcasting association).
Have you ever thought about moving to the ‘Randstad’ (i.e. metropolitan area of Amsterdam, Utrecht, Rotterdam and The Hague)?
We are frequently asked about this. But the answer is ‘no’. The most important thing for our company is to be creative. And to be creative you have to feel very much at home, which is the case here in Venray. Also, for producing our videos we need a lot of different locations. And here it is much easier to arrange them than in the Randstad. The atmosphere is cosy and people help each other out. In the end, we can easily hold online meetings with companies in the Randstad. As a result of Corona, everyone is now used to online meetings. But the big companies are also very keen to come to us here in North Limburg.
Do you have solid partnerships in the region?
We have worked with Jan Linders, a supermarket chain from the region, and Hela Curry from Venlo on several occasions. If we need new equipment we always go to the photo and video shop around the corner. Even if we need a location or clothing, we work together with businesses from Venray. We support local entrepreneurs and help each other out.
Does the Corona crisis have an impact on your company?
We have suffered a great deal. People tend to think that everyone is on the Internet these days and that turnover must be increasing. On YouTube, however, turnover has dropped significantly because brands are buying much less advertisements. Suddenly, we lost a third of our revenue on YouTube, as well as orders and campaigns that didn’t follow through. But now things are moving in the right direction again.
What does the German border mean to you? Are there any opportunities for your company?
Coincidentally, we have been discussing it more often lately. We are connected to a network that sells the advertisements that are shown on YouTube. Their headquarters are in Berlin. We have been thinking about dubbing our top 10 videos for the German market. There are good reasons for this: The Dutch have been very successful on the German market in the past and the sense of humour is pretty much the same. Moreover, our core business does not yet exist in Germany. But it is certainly a challenge to grow in the same way there on YouTube and you would have to work together with German YouTubers..
What are your future plans?
We are mainly developing further as an online production company. Ultimately, in the future we will have to focus less on Dylan’s face and more on producing videos.
What kind of team is responsible for the great successes of Haegens Media?
We have a permanent team with seven full-time employees. In addition, we always have four trainees. We also work with freelancers for camera, sound and editing. All in all, our team consists of about 18 people. Within our team, the employees have mainly completed audiovisual education and they all originate from the region. We are looking for real creative minds with an interest in and knowledge of the latest developments on YouTube. For example, we regularly have trainees from creative courses such as SintLucas in Boxtel. Fortunately, we can really pick the gems.
